Two Wins at the AMCHAMTT Awards

On the 7th October 2015, the Water and Sewerage Authority celebrated not just one, but two wins at the AMCHAMTT Awards which were held at the Hyatt.

Firstly, the Authority won the most Outstanding HSE Project based on the successfully completed project in the Guanapo Watershed.
Secondly, WASA shared this award with Scotiabank who won the award based on their Adopt A River Project in the Cunupia watershed. Two Adopt A River Projects (Guanapo and Cunupia) won that night which is an exceptional achievement for the Programme.
Some of the highlights of the programme which contributed to the WASA win are:
– The programme engaged all stakeholders in addressing river issues for example in Guanapo, the integrated approach to addressing the pollution from the Guanapo Landfill included UWI, SWMCOL, WASA and the community. In the Cunupia watershed, the collaboration was between Scotiabank, The Collect A Car Association (community group) and WASA.
– The programme produced empirical evidence that the water quality in the Guanapo River was improved based on the intervention of all the groups
– The number of adopters has increased from 5 to 23 from 2013 to 2015
– The number of watersheds adopted in Trinidad alone increased from 2 in 2013 to 13 in 2015
– The programme has completed 38 activities so far under the heading of Public Education and Outreach (10), Reforestation projects (3), Water quality testing exercises (6), School participation and competition (2), Community based projects (5), Clean-up exercises (7) and Video filming (5)
This award is the second for the programme for 2015: in July, the programme won 34.2 million dollars funding from the Green Fund Execution Unit.
